Choosing the Right School for Your Child

Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a parent. Every school has its own culture, expectations and way of doing things, so taking the time to explore your options can make all the difference. While there is no such thing as the "perfect" school, there is often a school that is the right fit for your child and your family.

As you visit schools and attend open days, here are some questions and observations that can help guide your decision.

  • Do the school's values align with your family's?

Read their vision and values, but also look for evidence of them in everyday school life. Do they genuinely reflect what matters most to your family?

  • Notice the environment.

Walk around the school grounds. Are the playgrounds inviting? Is there plenty of space to run and play? What do the sports facilities, library and outdoor learning areas look like? A well-cared-for environment often reflects the pride a school takes in its community.

  • Ask what a typical day looks like.

Every school structures the day differently. Looking at a class timetable can give you a better understanding of the balance between literacy, maths, inquiry learning, arts, physical education and play.

  • Consider the school's approach to learning and behaviour.

Is it more formal and structured, or relaxed and flexible? Neither is inherently better, it simply depends on what suits your child's personality and learning style.

  • Is there a school uniform?

Think about whether a uniform is important to your family, what it costs and how practical it is for everyday wear.

  • What are the homework expectations?

Some schools have regular homework, while others focus on reading and family learning at home. Make sure the expectations fit with your family's routines and beliefs about learning.

  • Is before or after school care available?

If you work or have other commitments, knowing what care options are available can make daily routines much easier.

  • What food options are available?

Does the school provide breakfasts or lunches, or do children bring their own? Understanding the expectations can help with planning and budgeting.

  • Talk to current parents.

One of the best ways to learn about a school is by speaking with families who already attend. Ask what they love, what surprised them and whether they would choose the school again.

  • Can parents be involved?

If volunteering is important to you, ask whether parents can help in classrooms, on trips or at school events. Being involved can help you feel connected to your child's school community.

  • How are children with additional needs supported?

If your child has learning, developmental, behavioural or physical support needs, ask what systems are in place. Are teachers experienced in supporting children with similar needs? Do they receive ongoing professional development? How does the school work with specialists and families to create successful outcomes?

  • How does the school communicate with families?

Find out how you'll receive updates about your child's learning, upcoming events and important information. Clear, regular communication helps build strong partnerships between home and school.

  • Trust your instincts.

Finally, pay attention to how the school feels. Were the children happy and engaged? Did staff greet you warmly? Did you feel welcomed? Sometimes your first impression tells you just as much as the information in the prospectus.

Remember, the goal isn't to find the "best" school. It's to find the school where your child will feel safe, supported, challenged and happy to learn. Taking the time to ask questions now can help your family begin the school journey with confidence.
