Ideas for Moments of Connection

Ideas for Moments of Connection

Together come up with ideas to put in a jar that they would love to do with you. Once a week or once a month pull one out to do. Such things as…

• Go for a bike ride
Go for a walk around the block together - even if you're not talking you're still connecting.
• Family boardgame
• Cook their favourite meal together
• Go to a museum, observatory
• Go to the local pools
• Go to the library
• Go to their favourite playground
• Picnic and explore a new part of your town or city
• Soccer or basketball at a park
• Trip to the beach, dig holes to sit in or search in the rockpools
• Camping in the lounge
• Have a backwards day with dessert for breakfast and breakfast for dinner
• Tenpin bowling, rock climbing, mini golf
• Go to the Zoo or an animal park to feed the animals
• Go strawberry picking
• Go to a concert, a show or sports game
• Café or restaurant meal out
• Go for a bushwalk, see a beautiful waterfall
• Go for a mini train ride, or a ride on public transport if it’s a novelty
• Climb a mountain or go to the coast and watch the sunrise

Micro moments of connection:

• Hold hands and squeeze 3 times “I love you”
• Read a chapter book to them, snuggling in bed
• Wake them up with a cuddle together
• Bedtime gratitude journal or talk about what made them happy today
• Shared hobbies like building Lego, baking, playing music, crafting together
• Play hide and seek
• 5 minute game where they’re the boss and can tell you what to do
(must not involve eating anything gross, buying anything or be dangerous!)
• Draw a picture together
• Blow bubbles outside
• Rough and tumble on the floor
• 5 minute dance party or sing favourite songs together
• Conversation at dinner or car rides, questions like:
Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?
Have a pet dinosaur or pet dragon?
Give up lollies or takeaways?
Have 3 legs or 3 arms?
If you had 3 wishes what would they be?
Describe a fruit or vegetable without naming it
If you were King or Queen for a day what rule would you make?
Riddles and jokes
